Services we cut into the ground
Every contract HEF CONSTRUCTION SERVICES LTD takes on starts with a clean site, a clear datum, and a signed scope. The six streams below are the core of our groundworks practice, followed by the way we run a job from first visit to final sign-off.
01 · The founding layer
Groundworks and Foundations
Foundations are the single point where a design becomes part of the ground, and there is no second chance to make them right. Our groundworks crews strip the organic topsoil, set out the footprint with a survey peg and a taut string line, and cut the trench or the pad down to a founding level that has already been agreed with the structural engineer.
We form trench fill and pad foundations, strip footings, raft slabs, and ground-bearing floor slabs to the thickness and reinforcement called for on the structural drawings. Rebar is bent, tied, and spaced exactly as scheduled, and a cover spacer is confirmed before the pour. Shutters are braced and squared, the release agent is applied, and the concrete is placed in the right mix at the right slump. We keep a vibrator in the crew so voids never sit unnoticed against the shutter face.
After striking, the finished element is checked against the datum taken twice, the cure is started while the surface is still green, and the whole record goes into the contract file. A foundation is only handed over when there is a signature beside a measured level, not a hopeful assumption about a line we saw drawn on a drawing board.
02 · Water that goes somewhere it can be managed
Drainage Installations
Foul and surface water drains are buried early, backfilled, and forgotten after handover, which is exactly why they must be right the first time. We set out the invert levels from the survey data, open the trench, and place the pipe bed so the run carries a steady fall with no backfalls and no sags that will fill with sediment over the years.
Our teams lay foul sewer runs, surface water runs, and combined systems to the approved network design, and we build the manholes, chambers, gully risers, and rodding eyes that make the system maintainable when the building is in use. Joints are seated to the sealing system, the surround is carefully hand and machine compacted in layers, and every access point is left at the level shown on the drawing.
Before we backfill the last metre we test the run, ask the inspector to witness the test, and file the signed gradient sheet. A drainage run that is a few millimetres off at an unseen joint becomes a wet basement years later; a run we test and sign does not.
03 · Level when it is green, level when it has gone off
Concrete Works
Concrete does not listen to excuses about a sloppy shutter or a missed datum. Our concrete crews blend production with a careful placing discipline so the slab that looks level on the day still looks level after it has cured and settled.
We place bulk trench fill, structural blinding, kickers, ground-bearing slabs, suspended toppings, and wearing surfaces. Mix design is matched to the element: a lean fill for mass concrete, a denser structural mix where reinforcement and cover matter, and a fine finish grade where the surface will be walked on or sealed. Slump, cube, and cover records are kept in the site file for the engineer to review.
Finishing is where the craft shows. We power-float slabs that need a hard dense finish, leave a restrained tamped surface where a topping follows, and always edge and crack-control exactly where the movement joint plan asks. Curing is started with sheeting and controlled moisture so early surface shrinkage does not turn a good pour into a cracked one. When the concrete is signed off it holds the exact levels and the smooth line the architect drew, with none of the guesswork hidden under it.
04 · A formation you can build on
Site Clearance
Beneath many otherwise tidy sites sit buried slabs, redundant service runs, and spoil left by contractors who hurried off. We start every development with a clearance pass that gets the ground back to a known, surveyed condition. Vegetation, hardstanding, abandoned manholes, and demolition arisings are removed to a licensed and compliant route wherever reuse is not sensible.
Where concrete or masonry can be crushed and screened on site we do it, turning demolition arisings into a confident sub-base and cutting the lorry movements that bother neighbours and the programme alike. The spoil that cannot be reused is monitored off site through a permitted route with tickets kept for the record.
The cleared ground is then formed, rolled, and trimmed to the levels on the plan. A clearance job that is rushed always resurfaces later as a problem inside the foundation zone, which is why we take the minutes to compact, test, and level the formation before the first real dig of the build.
05 · Ground held where it wants to slope
Retaining Structures
When a cut has to hold a slope, or a level difference has to be made usable on a housing plot, a retaining structure is the crisp answer. We build the sections that hold that difference in line: mass concrete and reinforced concrete retaining walls, blockwork retaining walls with proper drainage, buttressed and cantilevered walls, and pile-and-sheet lines for deeper cuts and basement exercises.
Behind every wall the backfill discipline decides whether it settles, heaves, or stays still. We backfill in thin, even lifts with a Type 1 drainage wedge next to the face, place the geotextile and weep drains at the right level, and compact so pressure never builds up behind the finished face.
Movement joints are formed where the design calls for them, curing protection is applied while the wall goes off, and the walings and props are removed only when the section has reached the strength shown on the design. A retaining wall we sign off will hold its line for the life of the development, drained, braced, and squared.
06 · A rideable finish and a dry fall
Roads and Footways
Site roads, access drives, parking courts, and footways share one demand: a level, well-drained running surface that sheds water. From the earliest development phase we form the sub-grade to the right crossfall, compact the formation, and put in the crushed stone sub-base in spec as the thin busy layers above it are only as good as what carries them.
We lay binder and wearing courses with the compaction and texture the carriageway spec asks for, set kerbs and edgings to a clean line and level, and finish footways, channels, and crossings so pedestrians and light traffic share a surface that is safe and tidy. Drainage falls to gullies are cut into the finish, not fought with it.
Where a scheme needs a temporary haul road for the build itself, we can keep one usable without compromising the permanent surface that comes at the end. The result is a development that opens to an approach road, car park, and pavement that have been constructed like the buildings they serve: square, level, and signed.

We run groundworks the way a good site cabin runs a job, with the sequence written down and every stage witnessed. It starts with a site walk and a careful reading of the drawings so we price the real ground, not the hoped-for one.
The five steps we follow on every contract
One, survey and set out the datum and the perimeter. Two, clear and form the working level. Three, dig and prepare the founding element with rebar, membranes, and service runs ready. Four, concrete the foundations and cure them to strength. Five, test, sign, and hand over the level jobs with a written record for the next trade. Levels are checked twice before a single pour, every time.
